One of the most unique aspects of Montessori education is its focus on child-led learning. For parents new to the Montessori philosophy, this approach can feel different from the more traditional idea of teachers directing lessons from the front of the classroom. If I could leave zero stars, I would.I urgently needed childcare after relocating to Nashville for work. I called on Monday and was scheduled for a tour on Tuesday. During the tour, the director confirmed that there was an available spot for my child. The environment seemed fine, and I was told to wait for registration forms.Instead, I received an email later stating that there was actually no space available. I immediately called for clarity and expressed that their registrar should be involved in tours to avoid this exact issue. The director responded with, “Well, it changes every 5 minutes,” and then added that she didn’t think the center was “a good fit” for my family. As a former daycare administrator myself, this was not only unprofessional but genuinely misleading. If a mandatory tour is part of the application process, there should be accurate enrollment visibility before confirming that a family has a spot. This caused unnecessary stress during an already tight relocation timeline. When I was leaving my tour, another couple arrived—a white man and woman—and I can’t help but question whether they were offered the space I was told existed. I hope that isn’t the case, but the experience leaves room for concern.

We had an amazing time at Southern Stars! Our daughter really blossomed and achieved so much. The families there are so friendly and welcoming, and we’ve even made some great friends outside of school. The administrators and teachers are super kind and easy to talk to. It couldn’t have been a better first school experience here in Nashville. We’re so grateful to this school. Thanks a bunch, The Waksman Family

Our son has been a student at this preschool for over a year, and our experience has been good. We are managing several food allergies, and on top of that the process of adjustment from in-home care to a school setting was a challenge for our son. We found a lot of support and flexibility from the staff in navigating the allergies and the adjustment process. Our son is thriving at Southern Stars, learns something interesting (a 3 yo coming home and talking about photosynthesis is pretty amusing), and he skips and sings on his way there almost every day. I enjoy the peace of mind dropping off my son in the mornings in a place that he enjoys and where he feels welcome.

Southern Stars has exceeded all expectations in the nearly 1.5 years my child has attended. The teachers (notably Ms. Elizabeth and Ms. Ricquia) and administration (Ms. Blythe and Ms. Jennifer) are both knowledgable educators and genuinely caring people. They are also extremely sensitive and responsive to parent requests. My child literally *runs* to school in the mornings because he is so excited to spend time with his friends and the teachers there. It is an extraordinarily happy environment, making me an extraordinarily satisfied parent. The only complaint I have is that my child will eventually have to go to another school.Sincerely,Eric B. Fugett, M.S., J.D.

You want to feel good about the people who are responsible for your child. You want to have them as advocates and as partners. We had a really great teacher, then all of a sudden they fired her. Literally, we got a 2 sentence email from the Head of School at 9:00 am ( an hour after everyone had dropped off their kids) that effective immediately our teacher was no longer employed at SS. Bit worrisome, yes? Naturally, we had some questions, and asked to speak with the Head of School. We immediately received an email telling us that our childcare was being revoked and that we were to come pick up our 2 year old. Effective immediately, we were no longer enrolled at the school. (What are they hiding?)Pay attention to the reviews - I'm not the only one who has had this experience. There are many others, and my guess is that there are many more to come. But what about all of those 5 star review? SS gives out money for good reviews, including being entered into a raffle for free tuition. The parents got offered Visa gift cards every month, if we'd only write a good review. But those of you out there looking for a loving, nurturing school for your children - you deserve to make a decision based on truth. And I'm not saying someone's 5 star review isn't their truth. I just know they haven't needed to ask the administration anything yet. Because this is the truth - they will not tolerate you asking questions, regardless of how kindly you pose them. They hide, and they try to convince you that their secrecy is state mandated, or they are the only ones in TN who follow the rules, or their closed door policy is to protect the kids. Don't be fooled. We were fooled, we bought all of it until we were kicked out and left scrambling for childcare. And then we saw how others did it, and that's when we realized - they are liars.Look, we're all adults here, and I think we are all able to recognize when we're in a conversation with a liar. I encourage you to speak with the owner, and count for yourself how many red flags you notice. I honestly can't wait for their response to this.

Our daughter started at Southern Stars when she was 18 months - this school is lovely and she has thrived! The property is awesome and safe, we love the teachers and the folks that run the school are communicative and flexible (a very rare thing, I have learned!). Things really seemed to click when they had a new director start too. We absolutely recommend sending your child for early childhood care.

Really nice preschool with a great staff. The stem activities the kids do are amazing and the facility is one of the nicest I’ve ever seen. We will absolutely be enrolling.

Can I give more than 5 stars? Our son has been at Southern Stars Montessori since just after he turned 2 (he's currently 3.5). This has included a full school year plus two summer camps. We LOVE it and cannot say enough good things about this place and the Montessori style overall. Most importantly to us, from Day 1, our little guy has loved going to school. As he's become more vocal and articulate, it's very clear how much he adores his teachers, the larger team, and his classmates. From our perspective as parents, the communication has been amazing via a great app that provides daily updates and photos from the teaching staff, and timely/responsive emails from the Director. We've always felt our child was safe/secure, loved, and getting access to great early education. A few additional bonus notes: The hours are great for working parents, with options for early drop-off and aftercare; they have a great meal program, providing snacks and an opt-in for lunch; and a personal favorite - they were a huge help supporting our potty-training journey!

We love Southern Stars Montessori! Our oldest has gone there for almost two years and plan to send our youngest when he reaches their age requirement. We've watched our son grow through multiple classrooms and teachers who have always made him feel right at home. The Director is also always listening to parent feedback and continually improving the experience (anything from the sign in process to facility enhancements).

First shout out to the school for accepting vouchers. As a single African American woman it is so disheartening to feel like I can’t get adequate education due to finances. The Montessori schools in Nashville are literally more expensive than rent and it’s ridiculous . Luckily here at Southern stars they took into consideration that broke people want Montessori education too ! It’s appreciated . Next the teachers are amazing and soooooo patient ! You don’t have to worry about abuse or lack of learning here . It would be a little more comforting if cameras were in the classrooms as well and the parents could watch from home but after going on a tour and just being present a few times I guess the cameras aren’t even necessary because the people are so kind you know that your child is in safe hands. I will tell all my friends and then some about this place !

Recently opened but we love it already! Our 2 year old is loving the stimulation and exposure to the school's extensive resources. He's able to learn and interact in a diverse age group, adapting quickly to the new environment. Classrooms are outfitted with tons of different learning activities in addition to the necessary letter/number/word lessons. Arts and crafts, puzzles, animals, and those traditional toddler themes are also used while learning more independent play. Our son seems to be getting plenty of book/reading time which has always engaged him and thrills us as parents. We were always curious about the Montessori approach, but now we're certain it's a good fit for us. Shanice and Kristin have been wonderful to work with, and we highly recommend Southern Stars!
